Kintaro by Hirata Yoko


Sosaku-ningyo of Kintaro by Hirata Yoko (1906-1975), younger brother of Hirata Goyo II, entitled “Yamawarashi” (Mountain Youth), highly contoured, full face with intense expression with eyes executing a kabuki-style mie pose, deeply carved eyes, painted details, child-hero dressed in a stripped silk brocade kimono with his left sleeve thrown off to ease movement, striking a dramatic stance with left foot thrust forward and his right hand holding aloft his famous battle ax, covered overall in a fine red-tinted gofun, reddish silk fiber hair with nakasori bald spot, mounted on a wood base bearing artist signature and title, and indicating piece was exhibited at Mitsukoshi Department store,  minor fading, staining, Figure: 10” High (Base: 14” x 12” x 1-1/2”)
